Wichita, KS - On May 18, 2011, at 6:00 PM, the Ride of Silence (now in its ninth year) will begin in North America and continue to roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a slow, silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to Share the Road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. The ride, which is held during National Bike Safety Month and Week, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways.
The Wichita, KS ride, which starts at the Heartland Bicycle, will consist of members of area bicycling clubs and the public. Approximately 50 cyclists are expected to participate in the 8 mile ride. Delores Craig, Ride Leader for the Bike\Walk Alliance-Wichita, will follow a pre- determined route through downtown Wichita, continuing through the East Wichita on the newly constructed 1st and 2nd Street bike lanes, and back to Heartland Bicycle.
“Unfortunately, there are far too many people who have been injured or killed in a auto/bike accident,” said Andrew Gough of Wichita, KS. In 2008 (the most recently (more) available Kansas State Traffic Accident Statistics) there were 290 reported accidents between automobiles and bicycles, which included 5 deaths. “Many drivers are not aware that bicycles share the same rights and responsibilities that automobiles currently operate under. Our message is ‘Thanks for sharing the road- for everyone’s safety,’” Mr. Gough concluded.
Participants of all abilities are invited to join the procession. The ride will not exceed 10 mph.
The event starts at 6:00PM at the boardwalk in front of Heartland Bicycle off Douglas Street, in Old Town, between Rock Island and Mosley Streets. A brief ceremony remembering family and loved-ones who lost their lives while riding their bicycle, will be held, followed by ride protocol and safety instructions. The ride will return to Heartland Bicycle around 7:30PM.
