A new portion of bike path will be built in Wichita's mid-town. The city council approved the extension of path that currently ends at Central. The city is able to pay for the path with money leftover from another bike path project.
The city plans to continue the path from Central to Waco, then south to 1st Street, and west on 1st Street to connect to the Arkansas River pathway system. The project will be put out for bid in June.
It will cost $140,000 to construct this portion of the path. The city will use leftover money from a block grant from the Department of Energy. The city was given the grant to connect paths from McAdams Park to Grove Park. That project is just about complete and came in under budget. The city checked and found the leftover money could be used towards another eligible pathway.
Great turnout for the Coasters first "Canal Cruise". I think there was around 35 riders. We started at the Donut Whole where a wide variety of tasty donuts were consumed. We then rode along Wichita's Canal bike path for a total of about 7 miles. The temperature was in the mid 80s and a extremely strong wind out of the South. Once back to the Donut Whole we all agreed not to do the additional 5 miles I suppose mostly due to the horrendous wind. It was a nice ride despite the wind. Thanks to everyone who came out! Hope you enjoyed it. We'll do this again on a different path.
P.S. I didn't realize it till we returned but I think we might have lost a couple of riders?
Both the 1st and 2nd street bike lanes are now complete from the Canal bike path (I-135) to Edgemoor street. 1st street is one-way East and 2nd street one-way West.
This evening I spotted 2 of the give-away bikes being ridden down the sidewalk. I knew they were the bikes because one w
as the boys and the other the girls and the girls still had streamers. Nice to know they are getting use.
I'm sure that's fine. They'll also need help loading bikes into trucks. I had forgot to post that they are also assembli
ng bikes on Sunday beginning at 1:00pm. I just updated the post.
